An update on trope bingo, aka I'm either doing this really right or really wrong...

...because I've been going about this like actual bingo, even though I didn't mean to, lol. But I did always want to try a Bingo challenge and thought that this would be more manageable than fandom-specific ones, because it's tropes and I love tropes. I love trying to find new ways to write them, I love trying to subvert them. And I love that in this case, I could write in any fandom and with any ship and with any character. Also, I had just finished writing Chrysanthemum Flowers and Jade Daggers and I was pumped to keep writing (an entirely unexpected feeling because I really thought I was going to be drained after that, considering how long it took me to finish it). I was like, trope_bingo should be totally do-able!

NOPE.

I got my card on August 22nd and trope_bingo officially ended on November 8th, and we're now in the amnesty period until December 31st. And thank goodness for that amnesty period because my card was not looking great up until last week. What would have been the logical thing to do was figure out which line I wanted to complete and plan out fics for them and then write them. Right?

What I ended up doing was writing whatever fics I got the urge to write and then trying to see if they would fill any of the squares on my card. See? Just like real bingo, but with fics instead of numbers.

...Also the minimum number of words for a fic fill is 100. My fills have ranged from 2,361 words to 22,870. That's just...excessive. (Where's that sweatdrop emoji? I need that here.)

Anyway, luckily, my card is looking...not so intimidating now, partially because I've retroactively decided to count Purple (Like the Shadows in Your Heart) as a fill for Rivals Working Together (ZXC and ZS). There are two lines that I have the possibility of finishing, with two squares left in each. And for 3 of those, I already have fics started that can fill them. The problem now is that I had actually started those fics awhile ago and made very little progress on them for various reasons (too much research needed, too big of a plot, not enough inspiration, etc).

Welp, I've still got 6 weeks so fingers crossed that I'll be able to do something for them. They've got over 100 words written already so I suppose that worst case scenario, I can try to tie them up enough so that they can stand alone (as part of a series of ficlets if not a full-fledged fic) and post those as fills.

Watching The Disguiser Through the Lens of NiF

So I started watching The Disguiser yesterday, because it's basically the NiF cast in an AU setting (reincarnation fix-it, anyone? Except I'm pretty sure this show's gonna end in heartbreak too).

Anyway, I'm only a couple of episodes in, but this very much feels like it could be a reincarnation AU in which Consort Jing and Lin Chen are siblings and Consort Jing finds her two sons in this life and is taking care of them here too. (They adopt MCS after his mother dies and later take in Xiao Jingyan.) MCS is the youngest child of the family and a prodigy and they all dote on him. They try to keep him out of political schemings by sending him off to university to finish his studies and follow the path of a scholar (which, minor spoiler: it doesn't work).

(belated) Sunday six

Wow, I knew I'd kinda gone missing on DW but I didn't realize it's been a whole month. Oops? (Anyone who knows me from tumblr knows that I occasionally will drop off the map for awhile and then come back but to all the rest, uh, yeah, that's a thing for me.) So....part of the reason I disappeared is that I got sucked in Nirvana in Fire - binged the show, started reading the novel, joined the DW community, considered going back onto tumblr to reblog pretty gifs, started plotting out fic, started writing fic. Yeah....

Anyway, onto the Sunday Six! So, the reason I haven't been posting these snippets is because I've been almost exclusively writing my fic for wipbigbang, and it's gotten to the point that I'm worried about either spoiling it too much or that the snippets I can post are kinda boring on their own, because they're from scenes that serve as more worldbuilding and plot connecting than anything really exciting. (Also I'm not entirely sure I can post snippets from this fic before the bang ends? Shhh, nobody tell the mods.)

So instead, here are 6 7 lines from a MCS/Jingyan NiF fic that may or may not ever get fully written.

A realization leaves him shaken to his core: Jingyan’s changed. He’s not the Jingyan that Lin Shu had known all those years ago, the one who was bright in soul and pure of heart, who made a promise to find an impossible pearl for a friend. He hasn’t been that Jingyan in probably the entire time that Mei Changsu has known him. But he hadn't seen that. He’d looked at Jingyan and seen only his old best friend, who he would tease and pull into pranks, who would go along with anything and everything he’d suggested with a good-natured huff and a roll of his eyes, who’d always say “only because it’s you, xiao-Shu.”

He can’t bring himself to look at Jingyan as Meng-dage comes to help support him down the steps of the Palace. He doesn’t want to see what Jingyan thinks of him now—of Mei Changsu, of Lin Shu. He hadn’t ever wanted Jingyan to find out, but especially not in this way. He thinks that he might just shatter to pieces if Jingyan hates him, and he must, because his childhood friend has become the very thing that he hates: someone who manipulates and uses people for their own purpose.

First Lines Meme

Saw a couple of people doing this and it looked fun, so I'm gonna give it a try too: Rules: list the first lines of your last 10 published stories. See if there are any patterns yourself, or have other people say what they notice.

One of these fics was actually originally uploaded to my Tumblr in 2017 but not to AO3 until November 2018 because I forgot but everything else is from the past 12 months so apparently I've written fics in 3 different fandoms in the span of a year, which is a lot for me.

So, patterns. Well, 4 of these are dialogue. 3 of them set the scene, and the rest are either the beginning or the middle of a scene. I do tend to like to drop readers right into where the action is happening and then fill in the surrounding details as I go, so that's not surprising. Almost all of them have the name of one of the main protagonist in it, and most of them are the pov character (but not all).

Similar to tinny I find it easier to come up with a first line than a last line. I don't remember if I ever go back and edit the first lines and I think I probably don't. Or at least, not significantly. Because the first line sets the mood for how I'm writing the rest of the fic and usually by the time I go to do edits, that line serves as such a foundation for the story that the rest would fall apart without it.

Chinese honorifics reference

I just found a pretty handy list of Chinese honorifics on Wikipedia. It includes honorifics used to refer to royalty, academics, family members, etc in 1st person, 2nd person, and 3rd person. Probably more helpful for writing stuff that's set in ancient China when everyone was using humble 3rd person language to refer to everyone including themselves.

Sunday Six and quick writing updates!

Thanks to a couple of writing sprints, I've made some progress on the alien invasion fic! \o/ Unfortunately, I'm now actually stuck plot-wise so I'm going to have to figure out how to get from Point A to Point B before I can do more.

I tried writing smut for my wuxia fic and ended up writing 150 words of sap, lol.
